We know that the Google Pixel line of smartphones has consistently delivered high-quality devices with impressive features and performance. As Google’s flagship Android phones, the Pixel series has gained a loyal following among tech enthusiasts and casual users alike. Bit of a cult following to be honest.

The recently released Google Pixel 8a aims to continue this tradition by offering a compelling mid-range option. Priced internationally at $499 for the 128GB model and $559 for the 256GB version, the Pixel 8a was made available for pre-order on May 7th and hit general availability on May 14th. The phone comes in four color options: obsidian, porcelain, bay, and aloe (we’re really thinking of doing a post on interesting phone colour names).

What’s good:

  • Excellent camera system with a 64MP main sensor and 13MP ultrawide lens, delivering vibrant and detailed images.
  • Powerful performance thanks to the Google Tensor G3 processor and 8GB of RAM, providing reasonably smooth multitasking and gaming.
  • Bright and colorful 6.1-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate for a smooth visual experience – and 120 Hz should really be the norm these days.
  • Impressive AI-driven features like Best Take, Magic Eraser, and AI-powered photo editing tools. These are similar to the AI features announced with Samsung’s latest galaxy release earlier this year.
  • Guaranteed seven years of software updates until 2031, ensuring long-term support and security.

What’s not good:

  • Plastic back panel instead of glass, which may feel less premium compared to more expensive models.
  • Slower wireless charging compared to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
  • Potential heat issues during extended use or gaming sessions.
  • Screen brightness may be insufficient in direct sunlight, even with adaptive brightness turned off. Such a shame really.
  • Costs ₹52,999/- (available on Flipkart). It’s pretty steep for a non-flagship mid-range phone.

So, should I buy?

In our honest opinion, the Google Pixel 8a is an okay choice for those seeking a mid-range smartphone with maybe-somewhat flagship-level features and performance. Its impressive camera, powerful processor, and long-term software support may make it a standout option in its price range.

That’s a lot of maybes and if’s.

If you prioritize premium build quality and faster charging, you may want to consider the more expensive Pixel 8 or 8 Pro models. That is if you can stretch your budget. The Pixel 8 Pro – if you have the budget for it – is a fantastic flagship phone.

Or, consider literally every other Android phone that offer the same specs for a lower price. Here are a few options at different price points:

And then if you don’t want an Android phone you have… the iPhone. Pretty simple.

But I have been using a Pixel for years….

… then, if you have a Pixel 6 or older and need to upgrade, get the Pixel 8 Pro. The only reason you’d want but wouldn’t get the flagship Pixel should be because of budget. But if your budget is around 50k, we think you should explore.

But hey, we’d love to hear from you if you’re a Pixel owner (sorry we used the word cult earlier in this article, we love you :)). Share with us your Pixel experience and suggestions!
